As a part of the updates Joint Commission (TJC) is making after adopting the 2012 editions of the National Fire Protection Association’s NFPA 101: Life Safety Code and NFPA 99: Health Care Facilities Code, a new requirement has been added to EC.01.01.01 that addresses the ways in which hospitals minimize risks in the environment of care.

TJC Environment of Care standard EC.01.01.01 has a new Element of Performance 3 that requires Hospitals, Critical Access Hospitals and Ambulatory Health Care Facilities to have a “library of information regarding inspection, testing, and maintenance of its equipment and systems.”

This requirement is effective January 1, 2018.

The library of information should include:

  • Manuals
  • Procedures provided by manufactures
  • Technical bulletins
  • Other information as needed

Included with today’s notice are example policies related to this new Element of Performance.
