Joint Commission Announces Additional Revisions to Life Safety and Environment of Care Chapters

The Joint Commission (TJC) has announced additional revisions to their Life Safety and Environment of Care Chapters in response to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) adoption of the 2012 editions of the National Fire Protection Association’s NFPA 101: Life Safety Code® and NFPA 99: Health Care Facilities Code.

The most recent revisions, which are effective January 1, 2018, are for organizations using TJC for deemed status under the hospital, critical access hospital, hospice and ambulatory surgery center accreditation programs.

Revisions include:

  • Testing of emergency lighting systems
  • Inspection and testing of piped medical gas and vacuum systems
  • Update of NFPA code numbering gin references
  • Additional specifics to existing EPs

Included with today’s notice are example policies related to emergency lighting and piped medical gas systems for hospitals.
