The Joint Commission (TJC) has announced that, effective July 1, 2019, Performance Improvement Standard PI.01.01.01, EP 21 for deemed-status ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs) will be eliminated. This EP requires deemed-status ASCs to collect data on medical necessity and appropriateness of procedures.

According to TJC, this EP was developed to align TJC-standards with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) requirements. CMS has revised their requirements which has eliminated the need for this TJC element of performance.

Effective July 1, 2019 deemed-status TJC accredited ASC’s no longer need to collect data on:

  • Medical necessity
  • Appropriateness of procedures
