TJC Clarifies Applicability of Specific Anticoagulants under NPSG.03.05.01

The Joint Commission has issued a series of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) addressing which anticoagulants are included under NPSG.03.05.01. Applicable to Critical Access Hospitals, Ambulatory Health Care, Hospitals, and Nursing Care Centers, NPSG.03.05.01 is effective July 1, 2019.

TJC revised NPSG.03.05.01 with the intent of improving the safety of patients getting anticoagulation therapy. According to TJC, this NPSG applies to all classes of anticoagulants except Antiplatelet Agents-GP IIb/IIIa inhibitors. Examples of anticoagulants included in the requirements are Heparin, Low Molecular Weight Heparin, Warfarin, Direct Oral Anticoagulants, although TJC notes that this is not an exhaustive list.
