Joint Commission Deletes RI.01.01.01, EP 8 Effective Immediately

PUBLISHED: Mar 20, 2018
Relevant to: Hospitals

The Joint Commission (TJC) has announced the deletion of RI.01.01.01, EP 8 effective immediately. TJC has determined, as part of a review to update and revise pain management standards, that RI.01.01.01, EP 8 is no longer relevant. According to TJC, EP 8, which requires the hospital to “…respect the patient’s right to pain management” is addressed by the new set of pain management standards that were implemented at the beginning of this year.

Further, TJC explains that the requirements in EP 8 are sufficiently addressed by other Individual Rights standards that require the promotion and respect of patient rights, the patient’s right to receive information via effective communication, the patient’s right to participate in decisions about their care, as well as the patient’s right to be free from neglect, preserving dignity, and have a process to resolve complaints.
