Joint Commission Proposed Requirements Related to Pain Assessment and Management

The Joint Commission is conducting a field review to gather input on proposed requirements related to Pain Assessment and Management for accredited Hospitals. The goal of the proposed requirements is to promote patient safety and quality of care while also aligning TJC requirements with the most current recommendations from scientific, professional and government organizations.

Some of the proposed requirements include:

  • Hospitals identify pain assessment and pain management, including safe opioid prescribing as an organizational priority.
  • Having patient’s pain assessed and managed based upon clinical practice guidelines and evidence-based practices in a manner that minimizes the risks associated with treatment.
