The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has issued a new MLN Matters article about Advance Care Planning (ACP) Implementation for Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS) Claims. The article details claims information which is necessary to process Advance Care Planning (ACP) services for OPPS claims. Billing staff should be made aware of these changes.

As of January 1, 2016, CMS began considering voluntary advance care planning provided in conjunction with an annual wellness visit a preventative service. Voluntary ACP services, upon agreement with the patient, are an optional element of the AWV.

Advance care planning is a face-to-face encounter between a physician (or other qualified health care professional) and the patient discussing advance directives, with or without completing relevant legal forms.
