| The JCAHO has published Sentinel Event Alert Issue 31 regarding prevention of kernicterus. Kernicterus is a type of brain damage that causes athetoid cerebral palsy and hearing loss. It can also result in mental retardation, and problems with vision and teeth. Kernicterus is caused by hyperbilirubinemia in the newborn. The JCAHO had published a Sentinel Event Alert regarding this issue in April of 2001, citing recommendations to prevent kernicterus. The JCAHO is now citing the July, 2004...
