| The FDA has approved two new drugs for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. HIV-2 infection differs from HIV-1 with HIV-2 developing more slowly and appears to be milder. HIV-2 infections are found predominantly in Africa. Patients infected with HIV-2 are less infectious early in the course of infection, however as the disease advances, HIV-2 infectiousness seems to increase - with the duration of this increased infectiousness shorter in the HIV-2 patient.
