| The Joint Commission (TJC) does not have specific standards that address required distances from a building for outdoor smoking areas. Environment of Care Standard EC.02.01.03, Element of Performance 4 does require hospitals allowing patients to smoke in specific circumstances to designate smoking areas that are physically separate from care, treatment and service areas.
