| CMS has issued a proposed rule that would change the Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS), the first major change to the program since its implementation in 1983. The first part of the proposed changes would be effective for discharges on are after October 1, 2006.
The first part of the revised IPPS would base the weight assigned to Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs) on hospital costs rather than on hospital charges, which is the current methodology.
