| CMS regulation 489.24b states that 'A woman experiencing contractions is in true labor unless a physician certifies that, after a reasonable period of observation, the woman is in false labor.' A woman found to be in false labor is considered not to have an emergency medical condition, which means that a hospital has no further EMTALA obligation to her.
